Sewa Day, started in the UK in 2010 as an international movement of social action. Based on the Sanskrit principles of 'selfless service'​, Sewa Day gives individuals an opportunity to donate their time for a cause they felt strongly about. Sewa Day's core focus is on time-based volunteering over monetary donation under 3 major umbrellas: 1) To relieve hardship and poverty 2) To help the environment 3) To bring a little joy Over the past 8 years, Sewa Day, an NGO registered in UK and Wales, has touched the lives of over a 100,000 people in 80 countries with that core focus intact. Hong Kong, home to Asia’s highest income inequality, has been part of the Sewa Day family since 2012. Starting with 1 project, 1 corporate, 70 volunteers cooked and distributed hot meals for 1,000+ people living in caged homes. The project was awarded the ‘Sewa Day Pioneers Award’ by then UK Prime Minister, Mr. David Cameron, in a ceremony at the House of Commons. Inspired by this project, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, E&Y and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) have run similar food drives every year, feeding over 10,000 people in the process. The novel idea of donation of one’s time spread rapidly across Hong Kong, with over 25 projects organized the following year, supported by corporates and community leaders. People’s enthusiasm took Sewa Day across Asia, including Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, India and Malaysia, leading to an increase in number of volunteers from double digits to quadruple digits, and the number of projects to over 50. Projects are usually targeted towards - The environment - Underprivileged (including the poor, refugees, domestic helpers, ethnic minorities) - Elderly - Children - Specially-abled Sewa Day HK has been recognised in the South China Morning Post, HK Radio and by the Consulate General of India.
