As Sean Hyatt prepared to move to Beijing to take up studies at Peking University, he let his then employers know that he would not be continuing his work with them. The then MD of Brands RMJ put the seed into Sean's mind that they would like to maintain access to him for any ongoing work as a complement to their team, but not as a direct team member. There and then, the Why Mai consultancy model was born. Throughout 2017, Why Mai worked to secure distribution for Brands RMJ’s flagship brand Cedel. The work started in 2016, identifying the potential of the toothpaste SKUs in the China market, and had developed into actively attending industry exhibitions to meet with potential partners. The early stages of 2017 were spent filtering through potential candidates and has now resulted in the establishment of a healthy sales channel for Cedel Toothpaste into the Chinese market. Following the successful entry into the Chinese market, Brands RMJ sold the Cedel brand to Heritage Brands Australia in 2018. Towards the the middle of 2017, Why Mai was engaged by Orcoda Limited (nee SmartTrans), an Australian Listed company, to help them drive their sourcing strategy. The roles required in this position included: - Managing contracts with key distributors and suppliers - Organising logistics for importing products into China - Working to secure IP and trademark registration - Building strategy for increased eCommerce sales SmartTrans’s looked to compete in the ultra-competitive Chinese eCommerce landscape, and in a year that saw mass consolidation from the entire industry, and mass failings of smaller players, the path for SmartTrans in China would ultimately not lead to success. Currently Why Mai is open to discussions and collaboration on potential projects to continue to grow ANZ brands in the China market.
