In a majority of these cases, refugees have missed out on their education and likely won’t have the necessary skills to survive in the modern world when they are relocated. By providing these refugees with an understanding of code, however basic, they develop a skill set that can impress potential employers and build confidence in their own ability to start a business. This, in combination with a willingness to learn and develop their skills, will ultimately increase their chances of a dependable income in the future. Refugeek provides courses that require no prior knowledge of computers or code and is available to any refugee or asylum seeker. The only prerequisite is that they possess an open mind to the idea of learning to code. Our courses begin with a four hour introduction to computers and the very basics of coding, allowing people to get a feel for the concept, and decide early on whether they would like to continue. Our idea follows a straightforward process. Often, refugees and asylum seekers must wait several years or more before their claims are determined. Instead of wasting their time and potential while waiting for the status of their claim, we begin to provide them with a general code and design education. Once their resettlement location has been determined, we can focus their education towards improving their skills to better serve the demands of their resettlement area. Through our connections, we can help ease our students into the workforce as we communicate with businesses to arrange interviews. With input from potential employers on development areas, we can then educate our students on these areas and better prepare them for resettlement. When a refugee is resettled, they board the plane with a job and an assured income to truly begin a new life and open a new chapter for themselves, and in many cases for their families.
